How did the United States end up with Alaska?

James Thompson (10 years old)

The United States bought Alaska from Russia is 1867, in what was called the Alaska Purchase. Russia sold it to us because they were worried that Britain would seize it if Britain and Russia had a war. The price for Alaska was $7.2 million dollars.  That seems like a lot, but is actually not much for something so big as Alaska!  In 2014 dollars, it would be $119 million – that seems soooo much, but for a state?  It is actually really little!  Seems like we got a pretty good deal!!

Alaska is really big, it is bigger than Texas, California, and Montana COMBINED!  You could fit 425 Rhode Island’s in Alaska!
